Salvation: English |
Q: How about the book of Acts?
Aren't there references to water baptism being performed after Jesus' glorification?
A: Yes. Old habits or traditions are hard to dissipate: you may be familiar with the problems Paul faced when he confronted those who wanted to perform circumcision as an assurance of salvation. Galatians 3, verse 2 : “Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?”. Verse 3: “Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?”. Galatians 5:1 : “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.”
Galatians 3
1. O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth,
crucified among you?
2. This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3. Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
4. Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.
5. He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of
faith?
For this reason we believe in the scriptural doctrine of salvation by faith alone with no other external rituals.
